Most Frequently Asked Questions About Lie Detector Tests

How many questions may I ask?

Our polygraph tests adhere to formats that are recognized and approved by the American Polygraph Association. These formats have been extensively researched and are considered to be the most accurate, and they are used by law enforcement agencies and government departments in the U.K. and around the world. We use either a one question test format called the UTAH test, or a three question test format known as the AF/MGQT. As these formats have been developed to ensure the most accurate and reliable results, we are unable to deviate from them or permit additional questions.

How should examinees prepare for a lie detector test?

To prepare for a lie detector test, examinees should:

  • Get a good night’s sleep before the test.
  • Avoid stimulants like caffeine before the test.
  • Be honest during the pre-test interview.
  • Understand the testing process and ask questions if unclear.
These steps help ensure accurate and reliable results during the polygraph examination.

At Lie Detector UK, we value your time and the efficiency of our services. To streamline the booking process and ensure your desired slot is secured, we exclusively accept appointments through our online booking system.

Once you’ve made your booking:

1. Immediate Confirmation: You will receive an SMS and email confirmation. This ensures that both parties are aligned on the date and time of the appointment.

2. Free Pre-examination Assessment: Along with your booking confirmation, we also offer a complimentary pre-examination assessment. This will guide you on what to expect and how to prepare for your appointment.

By using our dedicated online booking system, we ensure a seamless experience for our clients from start to finish.

What Can You Expect on the Day of the Lie Detector Test?

Once you have confirmed your booking, we will send you a booking confirmation with details about when and where to arrive. When you arrive at our private and discreet location, simply provide your name to reception as we prioritize client confidentiality. Our examiner will meet with you and the person being tested (if not yourself) and escort you to a controlled studio.

At the studio, we will check your identification and ask you to sign a consent form. The test is video and sound recorded for analysis purposes. The examiner will then conduct a pre-test interview to gather facts and begin the psychoanalysis.

After the pre-test interview, the polygraph test will take place where the person being tested is connected to the equipment and asked a series of questions while their physical readings are recorded. Only the person being tested and the examiner will be in the room during this process.

The final part of the test is where the examiner will analyze the results and draw conclusions. The results will be provided to you verbally, and a full verified report with more detailed conclusions will be transmitted to you via email or post upon request. We respect your confidentiality and will only disclose the results to the person who made the booking unless instructed otherwise. If you wish to have someone verify that the test is credible, we will provide you with a pass code for third-party communication.

How Does a Lie Detector Test Work?

The Lie Detector Test, also known as a Polygraph test, follows a controlled scientific experiment under a proven operating framework that combines the analysis of physical changes in a person while under questioning, with the principles of psychology. The test is conducted by a skilled examiner who measures changes in variables such as heart rate, breathing, and perspiration, in addition to psychologically evaluating the person being tested.

The psychological part of the test identifies specific issues and formulates a physiological profile of the examinee. The physical part of the test uses technical instruments to detect signs of deception and verification of the truth. The examiner combines the analysis from both the physical and psychological testing to draw conclusions and provide a professional report.

The Lie Detector Test is used globally in personal, criminal, and legal matters. In the UK, it is predominantly used to resolve personal matters like relationships, false accusations, and family disputes, with the success of such shows as Jeremy Kyle.

Is the Lie Detector Test Accurate? Can it be Wrong?

The accuracy of the lie detector test has been proven to be between 95% and 98% by the American Polygraph Association, based on results from over 6,000 tests. However, the accuracy of the test relies on how well the test is controlled and administered. An experienced examiner, a controlled environment, up-to-date equipment, and necessary credentials all support a more accurate test.

It is essential to ensure that you book your test with a qualified examiner and that they conduct the test following a proven framework. A professional examiner will be able to report on and make accurate conclusions, ensuring that you receive the correct results. Be sure to check the credentials of the examiner before committing to a test. You can use the links on our website to the APA or contact us directly to ensure that the examiner is reputable.

What mental and cognitive requirements must an examinee meet for a lie detector test?

Examinees should demonstrate:

  • Adequate abstract thinking, understanding the context and reason for the test.
  • Insight into their own and others’ motivations, able to explain reasons for honesty or dishonesty.
  • Understanding of right and wrong, including potential consequences.
  • Ability to differentiate between truth and lies, with clear examples.
  • Awareness of rewards and consequences related to truthful or deceptive responses.

These requirements ensure accurate and reliable results during the polygraph examination.

Who is considered unsuitable for a lie detector test?

The APA outlines that individuals with the following conditions are unsuitable for polygraph testing:

  • Active psychosis or unmanaged psychotic conditions.
  • Functional maturity equivalent to under 12 years old, as per psychometric testing.
  • Severe intellectual disability (IQ below 55).
  • Acute severe mental health conditions or those requiring continuous assistance.
  • Observable impairment due to alcohol or drug influence.

Testing should only proceed when these conditions improve, ensuring accurate and valid results.

Are polygraph tests safe for people with medical conditions?

Yes. The APA states that there is no evidence suggesting that medical conditions interfere with the accuracy of polygraph tests. However, examiners may recommend delaying the test if an individual is experiencing acute pain or severe medical distress, as these factors can affect physiological responses measured during testing.

Why is a non-refundable deposit required to book a test?

Our non-refundable deposit policy is a conventional norm within our industry and it serves crucial objectives. Primarily, it establishes an assurance of commitment from the client for the scheduled booking, thereby enabling us to dedicate appropriate resources and time to execute the test.

Secondarily, in the eventuality of a cancellation, this policy enables us to mitigate the incurred administrative expenditures and potential lost scheduling opportunities with other clients.

Furthermore, it is imperative to understand that polygraph testing is a sophisticated procedure, necessitating a significant level of preparation and proficiency from our examiners. The process incorporates comprehensive stages, including pre-test interviews, test administration, and detailed post-test analysis. Our examiners devote considerable time and resources into each examination.

By maintaining a non-refundable deposit requirement, we can safeguard the justified compensation for our examiners’ invaluable time and expertise, even when faced with unforeseen cancellations. This policy not only ensures a sustainable business model but also assures clients receive a service rooted in commitment and professional diligence.

Can pregnant individuals undergo a lie detector test?

Yes, pregnant individuals can undergo a lie detector test, provided their pregnancy is deemed normal and uncomplicated by a medical professional. The APA advises that examiners should obtain a waiver or statement from a healthcare provider confirming that the polygraph will not interfere with the pregnancy. Testing should be postponed for individuals experiencing a high-risk or medically complicated pregnancy.

How do developmental disorders affect suitability for a polygraph test?

Individuals with developmental disorders may still undergo polygraph testing if the process will not compromise their health or safety and if the goals of the investigation or assessment can be met. However, individuals with profound cognitive limitations (e.g., IQ less than 55) are considered unsuitable for testing. Suitability is assessed on a case-by-case basis by qualified examiners.

Can a person under the influence of drugs or alcohol take a lie detector test?

No. The APA states that individuals showing observable impairment due to the influence of controlled substances (prescribed or non-prescribed) or alcohol are unsuitable for testing. Testing should only be conducted when the examinee is free from such impairments to ensure reliable and accurate results.

What happens if an individual is found unsuitable for a polygraph test?

If an examinee is found unsuitable based on APA guidelines, the test should be postponed until the identified issues (e.g., mental health conditions, functional maturity, substance influence) are resolved. The examiner may recommend alternative assessments or further evaluations before rescheduling the test to ensure its effectiveness and reliability.

What is the Minimum Age Requirement for a Lie Detector Test?
According to the American Polygraph Association (APA), the minimum recommended age for a person to undergo a lie detector (polygraph) test is 12 years old. However, the APA emphasizes that functional maturity is more critical than chronological age. This means that the individual should demonstrate cognitive and emotional maturity equivalent to that of a 12-year-old, which is typically assessed using standardized psychometric evaluations.

This guideline ensures that the examinee fully understands the testing process and can participate effectively, providing reliable results during the examination.

Are polygraph results affected by medical conditions?

There is no published research suggesting that stable medical conditions interfere with polygraph test results. However, certain acute or chronic medical issues may affect testing outcomes. Examiners may choose to delay testing until the examinee’s health stabilizes, ensuring optimal testing conditions and valid results.

Can individuals with psychiatric conditions take a lie detector test?

Individuals with stable psychiatric conditions may undergo polygraph testing. However, those experiencing active psychosis, including hallucinations or delusional thinking, are considered unsuitable until their conditions are managed. Testing may proceed only when psychiatric issues are stabilized and the individual can fully comprehend the testing process.
